Cost of a Singer 221 Featherweight

I just came across an article on the cost of Singer 221 Featherweights in the early (1930s) years. I did a bit of follow up research and came up with some, to put it mildly, amazing numbers.I cannot find the average price paid for 221 Featherweights in 2017 but on Ebay it must be somewhere between $300 and $400 for a machine that is in good cosmetic and mechanical condition and ready to sew. (If you can find one for less in good cosmetic and mechanical condition that sews - well done.)In the middle of the 1930s new 221 Featherweights...

221 and 222K Manual Dates

If you have a Featherweight 221 or 222K you should have an instruction manual. Although any 221 manual will do for 221 machines (the same for 222K manuals) many Featherweight owners like to have the correct manual for the year of their Featherweight. The revision (Rev.) date of the green instruction manuals for 221 Featherweights is given on the top left of the cover of the manual just below the "Form" number. The first three 221 manuals actually had the date given as "November, 1933", "January, 1934" and "March, 1935". No other 221 manuals had the month written out. All manuals...

222K and 221 Featherweights. In both our store and on eBay all of the Featherweights that we sell are serviced, adjusted and tested. Any broken, faulty or missing parts are replaced with original Singer 222K or 221 parts. All parts are then thoroughly cleaned, inspected again and appropriate parts given two coats of a good quality carnauba wax. The machine is then reassembled, serviced, adjusted and tested for sewing. No Featherweight is put up for sale until it runs and...

Almost all, but not all, Featherweight cases have keyed locking latches. The later Featherweight tan and the white Featherweights did not have locking latches - with good reason as explained later in the blog. All black USA 221 Featherweight cases had "flat" keys. All 222K carrying cases are black with keyed locking latches. Most of these cases were made in the UK and had the "3 dimensional" key that was also used on UK manufactured 221 Featherweights. A few 222K carrying cases use the "flat" key. These cases were made in Canada and have "Made In Canada" imprinted on the underside of the...

Repairing the Cloth Hinge Inside a Featherweight Case

Many Featherweight cases have the cloth hinge inside the case that is ragged or completely ripped all the way across the case. Here is how to repair the ripped hinge material. You might want to start by removing the oil can clip and accessories tray but it is not necessary. It will make the project a bit easier. Remove the torn fabric completely using an X-Acto knife. Using Weldbond glue or Elmers Glue-All glue down any loose fabric that remains after cutting off the hinge. Make sure there is enough glue so that all the loose fabric will be glued...
