Our Featherweight Preparations Before Being Sold

222K and 221 Featherweights. In both our store and on eBay all of the Featherweights that we sell are serviced, adjusted and tested. More importantly before being serviced all our Featherweights, both 222K and 221, are dismantled and each part is thoroughly checked. Any broken, faulty or missing parts are replaced with original Singer 222K or 221 parts. All parts are then thoroughly cleaned, inspected again and appropriate parts given two coats of a good quality carnauba wax. The machine is then reassembled, serviced, adjusted and tested for sewing. No Featherweight is put up for sale until it runs and...

Fixing a Noisy Bobbin Case Holder / Hook Assembly

If your Featherweight starts to make noises in the hook assembly area of your machine it most likely needs a drop of oil. Unless your assembly has been damaged it is a very simple fix. To stop the noise first remove the bobbin case, tilt the machine so that the hook assembly is facing upward and add one drop (more is not always better) of sewing machine oil on the edge between the bobbin case holder and the hook assembly. Add another drop in each of the cut out circles on the bottom of the bobbin case holder. Hand turn...

Featherweight Carrying Case Keys

Almost all, but not all, Featherweight cases have keyed locking latches. The later Featherweight tan and the white Featherweights did not have locking latches - with good reason as explained later in the blog. All black USA 221 Featherweight cases had "flat" keys. All 222K carrying cases are black with keyed locking latches. Most of these cases were made in the UK and had the "3 dimensional" key that was also used on UK manufactured 221 Featherweights. A few 222K carrying cases use the "flat" key. These cases were made in Canada and have "Made In Canada" imprinted on the underside of the...

Repairing the Cloth Hinge Inside a Featherweight Case

Many Featherweight cases have the cloth hinge inside the case that is ragged or completely ripped all the way across the case. Here is how to repair the ripped hinge material. You might want to start by removing the oil can clip and accessories tray but it is not necessary. It will make the project a bit easier. Remove the torn fabric completely using an X-Acto knife. Using Weldbond glue or Elmers Glue-All glue down any loose fabric that remains after cutting off the hinge. Make sure there is enough glue so that all the loose fabric will be glued...

Requesting Safe Packing for Your Purchased Featherweight

How to Have the Featherweight Packed for Shipping Most Featherweights are bought and sold online. If you have purchased a Featherweight from an online site such as our store, Fabulous Singer Featherweights, or eBay, you want your new purchase arrive in the same condition that it was in when you purchased it. An email asking the seller to “please pack the Featherweight carefully” probably won’t be of much help. An email sent to the seller containing specific “simple packing suggestions” for safe packing is much better and appropriate. In most cases the seller will appreciate the packing suggestions. Featherweights are notorious...
